Comments: Saw Micheal Penn recently in concert. Great show! My only regret is that he wasn't the headliner so he could have played a longer set. I didn't get a chance to hear one of my favorite songs, "This n'That" and I would have LOVED to hear that performed live. The new songs sounded great, especially "Try."

Comments: i recently left my home for a week. with me i brought the essentials, which include march, free-for-all, and resigned. guaranteed to meet all of your musical needs. a question for anyone who cares to answer: i know that resigned was named for the series the prisoner, but does anyone know for sure if michael purposely used the episode name of 'free for all' from the same series when naming that wonderful second album of his?

Favorite song(s) from March ---No Myth, This & That, Brave New World, Bedlam Boys, Invisible
Favorite song(s) from Free For All ---Drained, Bunker HIll
Favorite song(s) from Resigned ---Out of My Hands, Small Black Box, I Can Tell
Favorite line(s): This may not be my best day, but this ain't no golden age. (Brave New World) So I just whispered to her under breath, "This love has suffered such a quiet death." (Bedlam Boys)
Comments: I first heard No Myth as a freshman in high school and just fell in love with the song. I bought the tape a week later and was surpised to find so many great songs--catchy melodies, biting, intelligent lyrics, and plenty of hooks. Then in my senior year, Free for All basically provided the soundtrack. And, now when I'm in between college and med school I'm listening to Resigned. Still March is my favorite and whenever I travel, I bring that tape along (I bought the CD to use at home), and I always end up in a very reflective mood. Michael Penn's the only musical artist that has such an effect on me (well, other than the Sundays who always seem to release albums in the same year). Anyway, this is a great web site. Any more guitar tabs in the works? I'd love to play "I Can Tell."

Favorite line(s) (from "No Myth"): I'm between the poles and the equator - don't send no private investigator to find me please - unless he speaks Chinese and can dance like Astaire overseas
Comments: No Myth - My absolute favorite song. Clever lyrics, great melody - great chords.
Brave New World - The staccato versus with the arpegiatting guitar makes it a great road song.
Invisible - perfect understatement with lyrics and music
Bunker Hill - best lyrics on Free-for-All
Coal - lush harmonies make it a gem
Try - this song just stays with you after you hear it
All That Implies - well-crafted song

Favorite line(s): "This paradise is slowly crumbling from here to Wilshire Boulevard but the rubble over which you are stumbling just isn't that hard." (Half Harvest)

"Oh don't look in those eyes bluer than blue her rule's on the rise and if I wear apathy's crown don't call me highness."(Long Way Down)

"They're cutting the bull and they're drinking its blood They show me a patriot show me a scud And that's about all I can get from t.v. and there's still this feeling sticking with me."(By the Book)

"Forget the plumber, call a priest the convicts have all been released and I just screwed this up at least I think I have"(Drained)

"Was mystified Took a Greyhound for a ride And by Arcadia decided I'd be Steven Now we're even"(Now We're Even)

"And men will toil in suits of foil as they explain that this girl was annointed with an oil" (Like Egypt Was)

" Looking up your balcony by the light of the moon I will be I suppose baby don't want me around. The stars above me are not real, they are the sparks from splitting steel. I propose forging in making that sound."(Me Around)

"Hey hey I'm underdog I'm Wally Cox, got no beer in my fridge got no gold in my Knox but I'm eternally grateful to you for the call Some kinds of times happens once and for all"(Cover Up)

"Know that you are drawn to it, so all I am is counterfeit it pulls so you must submit, like ant to honeydew" "To add insult to injury, the sum you get means I agree, You can call that empathy find someone else to blame"(All That That Implies)

"Virtuous or Virtual You might find a prince of men, until that time my name is Penn and I am selfish"(Selfish)

"Seen you juggle I've seen your best, I've seen you running out of luck you pressed, I've seen the scores on how far up you've fessed until a thinner air is what you're breathing now, don't just stand there holding it I've seen you die a little death, I'm pretty sure you were here, lately things tend to disappear, like the days I never got around to.! "(I Can Tell)

Comments: Why do I like them so much???? That is a question way too hard to answer... Michael Penn writes the kind of songs that just get you somewhere way down deep inside and dredge up reality and pain and bliss and confusion and every thing that happens. And it seems like every time one of his c.d.s comes out I am having something MAJOR happen in my life... so it's like his work always gets to be the soundtrack for my little events... all I can say is from the moment I first heard "No Myth" 7 years ago until now I have thought this man was brilliant and with each new song I hear, I am more sure of it... I pray that he never stops writing these songs and singing them... he is wonderful!!! Thank you!

Favorite line(s) (from "Bunker Hill"): Who would ever leave this place? It's overdrawn and won't erase.
Comments: It's virtually impossible to pick favorite songs from any of Michael Penn's album. Lyrically and musically his work is so close to perfect. My picks are only what I have had a tendency to play the most when I first get the album. But there's something appropriate from his work for every mood, moment and period in your life.

Favorite line(s) (from "Like Egypt Was"): I'm on a three day binge on the lunatic fringe.
Comments: Really hard to choose a favorite song from "Resigned". Michael has done an excellant job with this album. It has a great mix of songs from rockers to gentle ballads.

Love those beatlesque guitar riffs and his captivating voice, and hope we don't have to wait another five years to hear from him again.

Favorite song(s) from Resigned ---Out of My Hands, All That That Implies
Favorite line(s): Too many to mention
Comments: Each of the songs mentioned are my favorites, but each CD works best when taken in its entirety. Free For All is so much better played all the way through rather than by separate cuts.

"March" remains the best in my eyes. "Resigned" has a series of good songs, but I'm really disappointed in the filler tunes in the middle ("Selfish" and "CoverUp"). Given Michael's talent, why are these on the CD? It's been years since "Free For All", so I expected he had built up a ton of great tunes to fill a CD.

Favorite song(s) from Free For All ---Likes ALL of Free For All
Favorite song(s) from Resigned ---Likes ALL of Resigned
Favorite line(s) (from "Battleroom"): "Windows, cover the windows! Don't you know the neighbors talk? Windows, cover the windows- if you don't then I might walk away."
Comments: Michael Penn's music helped me survive a brutal divorce of my parents. I was able to escape the pain incurred by it all in the lyrics, in the rythmns, in the hope that it would end.
Battleroom was the icing on the cake for me. While everyone around watched(which is so true) I would slip the walkman on and pretend to live in this world envisioned by him. I must say that Resigned is like the connecting piece in the puzzle.
(by the way this web page is pretty cool.)
